A virtual private server is a single physical server, split up between a limited number of users. It is a similar hosting set-up to a shared server, where many user accounts are located on the same server. The main difference between these two server setups is that VPS accounts have fewer users per box, and the users get more control over their section of the server. Virtualization software divides the users from each other, although you’re not entirely isolated from being affected by other people on your server.

Sorry about the late timing!!!! I just bought a Panasonic cf-52 laptop with Win 10 PRO running on a Windows Vista COA. Well, I’d like to think your last statement STILL holds true for my efforts. …Can you confirm this? I’m primarily interested in running old OS’s such as WIN XP. or older windows OS’s…who knows maybe some DR-DOS files and .apps. I’m thinking I can stay away from migration and dedicated server machines and all that goes along with security issues. Thanks for any feed back.

In operating-system-level virtualization, a physical server is virtualized at the operating system level, enabling multiple isolated and secure virtualized servers to run on a single physical server. The "guest" operating system environments share the same running instance of the operating system as the host system. Thus, the same operating system kernel is also used to implement the "guest" environments, and applications running in a given "guest" environment view it as a stand-alone system. The pioneer implementation was FreeBSD jails; other examples include Docker, Solaris Containers, OpenVZ, Linux-VServer, LXC, AIX Workload Partitions, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, and iCore Virtual Accounts.
It’s recommended that you do not statically assign the private IP assigned to the Azure virtual machine within the operating system of a VM, unless necessary, such as when assigning multiple IP addresses to a Windows VM. If you do manually set the private IP address within the operating system, ensure that it is the same address as the private IP address assigned to the Azure network interface, or you can lose connectivity to the virtual machine. Learn more about private IP address settings. You should never manually assign the public IP address assigned to an Azure virtual machine within the virtual machine's operating system.

You can move corporate applications to the cloud, launch additional web servers, or add more compute capacity to your network by connecting your VPC to your corporate network. Because your VPC can be hosted behind your corporate firewall, you can seamlessly move your IT resources into the cloud without changing how your users access these applications. You can select "VPC with a Private Subnet Only and Hardware VPN Access" from the Amazon VPC console wizard to create a VPC that supports this use case.

Virtual private servers have become a popular choice for web hosting because they offer many benefits of dedicated servers at a lower cost. They also provide the added benefit of easy scalability. Since each VPS is virtualized, the configuration can be updated with a software modification rather than a hardware upgrade. Still, dedicated servers often provide better performance since all the resources of the physical machine are dedicated to a single server.

The primary disadvantage to using a VPS is its lack of performance. The organization that provides the VPS will typically throttle the server's performance in an effort to maximize the number of VPSs that the physical server is able to accommodate. In the unlikely event that the VPS's performance is not throttled, it then becomes possible for an adjacent VPS to consume excessive resources, to the point of impacting the VPS's performance.
With unmanaged cloud VPS hosting, the hosting provider is only responsible for the physical server and the availability of the server.  This means that with the exception of the initial OS installation, the user is responsible for the maintenance, upgrades, installation of software, etc.  If you choose unmanaged cloud VPS hosting, you should be familiar with the operating system and server software you choose to use.
You can choose to create additional VPCs by going to the Amazon VPC page on the AWS Management Console and selecting the "Start VPC Wizard" button. You’ll be presented with four basic network topologies. Select the one that most closely resembles the network topology that you’d like to create and choose the "Create VPC" button. Once the VPC has been created, you can begin launching Amazon EC2 instances into your VPC.
